How to get current chapter from within a widget

I'm creating a widget where I want to tailor the content depending on what chapter the user is currently reading. Is anyone aware of anyway to pass the current chapter through to a widget or access it from a widget? Ideally it would be some kind of global variable which I can access from inside the widget but I've been unable to find anything to suggest this is possible..
